This week’s episode is hosted by talented South African duo FRIGID ARMADILLO with their unpredictable, innovative and quirky sound. Siyabulela (Siya) Buhlungu and Lebo Luchela began making music together in varsity when Siya accidentally left a project on Lebo’s laptop. What started as a pass time became the catalyst for a complete change in career trajectory for Lebo who quips it was Siya that inspired the drastic change.
 
For Siya the love of music was belated. “I wasn’t into music as a child. I stumbled across it,” he recalls. The pair was brought together by their love for Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Dubstep and EDM although Lebo couldn’t resist the enigmatic influence of Kanye West. Siya sums it up best in saying “our music is a fusion of everything we’ve listened to.”
The growing pains of seeking a signature style have seen Frigid tow the lines of genius and absurdity explaining, “We consciously toned down on the quirkiness. We’ve become committed to the quality of the final product and making our music relatable.”
The challenge comes in maintaining ones personality whilst upholding good standards. “We’re not as creative as we used to be but we are more pragmatic. Experience and knowledge take you steps forward,” they confess.
When it’s all set and done Frigid Armadillo wants to be remembered as timeless and influential. “We want people to be like ‘wow, those guys were different’.” It’s only a matter of time before the curious pair with a peculiar name make a seismic change in the South African tech and mainstream house fraternity.
